Vazhakkai Varuval is a modified form of Vazhakkai Masala except for the shape in which it is cut. This is a side dish mostly made in all Chettinad Marriages. The crispness and the spicy taste make it unique and everybody likes. Vazhakkai Varuval was made with the fish shaped raw plantain vegetable, but now a days it is cut normally, as most people think it is fish, if it is cut in fish shape. This shape gives the name Vazhakai Meen Varuval.
Vazhakkai Varuval is a common Side dish of Chettinad and is common in all Chettinad Homes.
Vazhakkai Varuval is easy to make and can be made with a lot of variations to suit your taste.

Ingredients:
- Vazhakkai – 2
- Mustard – 1/2 tsp
- Urad dal – 1/2 tsp
- Sombu(fennel seed) – 1/4 tsp
- Oil – 4-5 tblsp

- To Grind:
- Red chilli – 6
- coconut – 2 tblsp
- Khuskhus – 1 tsp
- Sombu – 1 tsp
- Jeeragam – 1/2 tsp
- Pepper – 1/4 tsp
- Cinnamon – 1 inch piece
- Fried gram powder – 1 1/2 tsp
- Salt – to taste

Method
Peel the skin and cut in tp one inch pieces. Grind the ingredients in the small plate with salt and fried gram.
Marinate the vazhakkai with ground masala.
Heat oil in a frying pan and add mustard, urad dal and sombu. When they crackle add marinated vazhakkai and stir well.
Then close the pan with a lid for 5 to 10 minutes. After 10 minutes open the pan and stir often till done.
Serve it with rice or curd rice.
